London-based artist Patrizio di Massimo (b. 1983) has been invited to present a new intervention to be installed within the Estorick’s permanent collection galleries. The intervention is co-organised with the Consulate General of Italy in London and runs from 25 February until 12 April 2026.
Between Us brings together paintings by di Massimo produced between 2020 and 2026, presented in dialogue with works from the museum’s collection by leading Italian modern artists including Umberto Boccioni, Carlo Carrà and Giorgio de Chirico. Rather than tracing a narrative of influence or artistic lineage, the display sets contemporary and modern works alongside one another, encouraging viewers to notice unexpected connections, contrasts and moments of tension. Di Massimo’s paintings often revisit the same figures and situations, using repetition and role-play to explore personal feelings and vulnerability. Characters appear again and again across different works, allowing the artist to examine intimacy, desire, power and artistic identity. Drawing on imagery shaped by his own life and experiences, di Massimo treats painting as a process that builds meaning over time, through returning to and reworking ideas. Family members and fellow artists, including Gray Wielebinski and Tai Shani, feature in his paintings, all of which are displayed here for the first time.
