Join us for a hands-on experimental workshop where you will transform Union Chapel from a building into a living instrument in this joint project delivered by the Estorick Collection.

Inspired by the Futurist Manifesto and Luigi Russolo’s groundbreaking work on display at the Estorick Collection and archival material from Union Chapel related to scientist and social justice pioneer Margaret Watts Hughes, you will explore how to translate sound into an art.

We will conduct a series of exercises designed to activate the acoustics of Union Chapel. Participants will interact with the building’s surfaces to discover the sound of materials, textures and spaces.

You will learn to translate pitch, timbre, rhythm into a Visual Score Poster. Guided by Russolo’s concept of the Intonarumori (noise-makers) and Margaret Watts Hughes’s experiments in sound visualisation, you will create a graphic score that serves as both a piece of art and a functional blueprint for a new kind of music.

Note:
Participants must be 18 or over.

Starting at Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art, 39a Canonbury Square, London N1 2AN - please arrive at 9.45am for doors. We will later lead to Union Chapel N1 2XD opposite during the workshop.
