On 24 September 2026, curator Sohyeon Kim presents Decelerating Futurism, a listening and writing workshop that invites visitors to encounter Futurism differently through sound and text.
The workshop asks what happens when Futurism’s celebration of speed and technology is revisited to reflect on our ways of life in the contemporary world. Beginning with the painting Music by Luigi Russolo, the workshop invites participants to notice the soundscape of daily lives and translate the experience into a collective writing that responds to Russolo’s manifesto The Art of Noises.
The workshop is part of the Estorick Collection Student Takeover programme. Everyone is welcome, and no prior knowledge of Futurism or music is needed. Bring your curiosity about art, sound, and the everyday experience you would like to share with us.
Bio: Sohyeon Kim is a London-based curator born in Busan, South Korea who recently completed an MA in Curating Contemporary Art at the Royal College of Art. Her practice explores how stories and memories move across place, time, and people, with an emphasis on ecological ways of seeing and relating to the world. Informed by her personal experiences of dislocation and participatory engagement, she views curating as a durational process that transforms individual life narratives into shared sensory experiences.
Her recent projects include Shimmering Tides (RCA), a scent-based workshop exploring memory and conversation; Stalling (RCA), an installation examining time, economy, and sustainability; and Water Diviners (YDP), a performance grounding personal water stories in lived experience.
