This catalogue was published to accompany the exhibition Terra Incognita: Italy’s Ceramic Revival, curated by Lisa Hockemeyer, held at the Estorick Collection in 2009.

Terra Incognita explores the ceramic culture of Italy during the twentieth century, distinguished by the rejection of traditional boundaries between artists and ceramicists spearheaded by the great ceramic master Pietro Melandri and the sculptors Arturo Martini, Marino Marini, Lucio Fontana.

The exhibition featured fifty works drawn from The Hockmeyer Collection of Twentieth Century Ceramic Art, thirteen of which are considered in detail by Lisa Hockmeyer in this catalogue. The catalogue also includes an essay on twentieth-century Italian ceramics, also by Hockmeyer.
